Hall Allotment is something that every first year (boy) at IIT Kharagpur looks forward to at the end of his first year. The tradition at IIT Kharagpur has been that the first years, when they arrive at the institute, are put up in a separate hall namely MMM (Madan Mohan Malviya Hall of Residence). There they stay the whole year happy amongst themselves, aloof from the rest of the happenings in the campus, away from the much dreaded seniors. Since ragging is officially banned in Kharagpur and the first years are in a separate hall, the chances of a first year being ragged are almost nil. The few cases which do happen are mainly some show-off self-acclaimed-stud first year taking the case of some poor chap who doesn’t realize that he is being ragged by his fellow batchmate. These cases are rare, but they do happen.
Let’s get back to the topic. At the end of the first year, each student is alloted a senior hall. There are mainly 6 senior halls-
- RP (Rajendra Prasad Hall of Residence)
- RK (RadhaKrishnan Hall of Residence)
- LLR (Lala Lajpat Rai Hall of Residence)
- PH (Patel Hall of Residence)
- NH (Nehru Hall of Residence)
- AH (Azad Hall of Residence)
There are two more halls MS (Meghnad Saha Hall of Residence) and HJB (Homi J Bhabha Hall of Residence) but they aren’t really considered to be senior halls as not many cool seniors stay there. (There are many more halls, but they aren’t B.Tech. halls, more on that in a later post.)
The entire year of my stay here, I had looked closely at all the halls. And I had decided that I wanted to go to RK. Well, hall allotments aren’t done based on wants, so it was just a wish. When the second semester final exams got over and I came back home to Delhi, the list hadn’t come out yet. My apprehension was at an all time high. I didn’t know what I was going to get. Random fearful thoughts of me getting HJB or MS kept coming to my mind. Those were tough times. I kept fighting back and tried to think about going to RK.
Finally, a few days ago, the hall allotment list came out. And I got RK!
Yo RK!
